Development of a tool for the management of industrial water, related mass and heat flows

A multi level model for the integrated management of industrial water flows was developed on the basis of existing know-how (e.g. EU project AquaFit4Use, own expertise). It was intended to

  • predict the economical and calculate the ecological effects (e.g. impact on water bodies) of water recycling and the related technologies in collaboration with the "Assessment" working group.
  • optimize water treatment technologies, processes and sites.
  • demonstrate the potential for freshwater savings, the recovery of heat and valuables for the European Chemical Industry. Furthermore potential risks caused by possible failures of single treatment steps will be predicted for extreme operation conditions. The most appropriate technologies and the places of their most efficient application will be identified.

The model was developed and enhanced on the basis of the Simba® software platform, integrating new modules and enhancing existing modules, by heat flow, and integration of production process streams. Application were carried out at selected industrial case study sites.
